Help greyhounds by bidding in our new auction

Dear Friends,

Did you know that greyhounds must be kept perpetually muzzled while out in public in some parts of the world?

In the Australian state of Victoria, there is a legal requirement that greyhounds remain muzzled and leashed when not on their own property. Specifically, Section 27 of the Domestic Animal Act of 1994 prescribes that greyhounds be "(a) muzzled in a manner which is sufficient to prevent it causing injury by biting; and (b) under the effective control of some person by means of a chain, cord or leash."

Jeroen and MillieThe result is that many local residents are fearful of greyhounds and believe that the gentle hounds we know and love must be dangerous! This public perception clearly has a chilling effect on adoption.

Thankfully, Parliament has announced a new review of the Domestic Animal Act with a public comment period open through July 10. Please join us in sending a short submission by e-mail to the Environment and Infrastructure Committee today at eic@parliament.vic.gov.au

It is our recommendation that the muzzling requirement be rescinded and that greyhounds be treated just like all other dogs. Please read our submission and then send one of your own before July 10.

No matter where you live, comments are welcomed. If you have a greyhound, please let the Committee members know it! Be sure to reference Section 27 of the DAA in the subject and text of your e-mail.

Thank you to the Greyhound Equality Society for alerting us to this opportunity to help Victoria's rescued hounds. For more information and to read tips for your submission, please go to the GES facebook page.
