Hundreds of greyhound adoption groups have formed across the world to find homes for dogs discarded by the racing industry. As part of our continuing series, today we would like to spotlight the wonderful work Australia's of
Friends of the Hound.
Recently, I was contacted by Lisa White, president of Friends of the Hound, to assist with the rescue and placement of greyhounds in Australia. Her group saves as many as 150 greyhounds a year. Lisa wrote:
As you know, Friends of the Hound is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to rescuing greyhounds in Australia. Since 2003, we have been saving these gentle hounds and placing them with loving families. We also work very hard to raise public awareness about the cruelty of dog racing and the plight of all animals involved. See our new video here.
As in the United States, Australian greyhound racing is responsible for the overbreeding, exploitation and routine killing of thousands of greyhounds every year for the gambling industry. The recent gruesome footage aired on national television about live-baiting training methods has sickened our country, and the full extent of the criminal activity implicit in this industry is now under intense scrutiny.
Around 20,000 Australian greyhounds are bred for racing every year, with the only possible outcome an early death for most of these dogs. The high injury risks, the use and abuse of prohibited substances, the confinement of dogs in small cages for long periods of time, and of course, the prevalence of live baiting training methods are among the many problems we are dealing with. Friends of the Hound is calling for a ban of this industry now.
As long as it does continue, however, we will continue to save as many precious lives as possible. But we could really use your help. Our group operates on limited funds and resources, without a base or shelter. It is due to the sheer dedication of our volunteers and foster carers that we have been able to save so many beautiful greyhounds. But with the news from the live-baiting scandal now reverberating across the country, we have been inundated with requests to absorb more and more dogs.
Please ask your supporters to help us save lives at this crucial time. All donations, small or large are appreciated!

Lisa and her team really need our help. Please join me in supporting Friends of the Hound today.
