Dear Friends,
The live baiting scandal is still wreaking havoc in the greyhound racing industry. Schweppes, Hyundai, McDonalds, Bendigo Bank and others have already withdrawn their sponsorship. In Queensland the first five trainers have been banned for life and two people so far have been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Investigations and enquiries are ongoing. And, importantly, many Australians have opened their hearts to greyhounds and offered to welcome these beautiful dogs into their homes.
I am now writing with two specific actions you can take to help greyhounds.
- Despite the strong opposition of the Logan City Council, the Queensland Government is still intent on building a $12 million Cronulla Park dog track in Logan. But with enough community opposition, there is hope that this plan will be terminated. Please send a short email to Queensland Racing Minister, The Hon Bill Byrne at agriculture@ministerial.qld.gov.au. If you are a Queensland resident, you may also send a message or call your state MP. You may find your local member's details here.
- The NSW Greens have been long-time supporters of our cause. On Saturday 21 March, they are holding an "Every Dog Matters" event in Sydney in which they will call for the immediate suspension of greyhound racing in NSW. I will be speaking at the event and would love to see you there. The event will take place in the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in Newtown and starts at 9.30am. RSVP and see all of the details here. If you have a greyhound, please feel free to bring him or her with you.
Thank you for your continued support to rid Australia of the cruelty of dog racing.
