Victory in the Lone Star State!

Dear Friends,

On Monday, a Travis County judge ruled that racetracks in Texas could not use slot machines to make up for their losses on live racing. This means that the cruelty of dog racing at Gulf Greyhound Park will not be subsidized and two former dog tracks will not re-open as "racinos!" The state's last operational track will now stand or fall on its own.

Read the story here.

In June, we asked you to write a letter urging the Texas Racing Commission to vote against "instant racing" slot machines. Then in July, we asked for your signature on a petition to Governor Rick Perry asking for his help in stopping this dangerous proposal. Despite all these efforts, it took two lawsuits to accomplish this goal. In the end, the court agreed that slot machines are prohibited by the Texas Constitution and could not be installed at racetracks.

  • Did you know that more than two thousand greyhound injuries have been reported at Gulf Greyhound Park since 2008, including eighty-six greyhounds that died or were euthanized?

  • Hundreds of greyhounds also endure lives of confinement at this terrible place. They are kept in warehouse style kennels, in small cages that are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.

  • Thankfully, greyhound racing is dying nationwide and in Texas. Between 2007 and 2012, gambling on live dog racing in the state declined by 61%.

Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane. It should not be subsidized with slot machine profits and we are grateful that Judge Lora Livingston agreed.

We would like to express our gratitude to both the humane organizations and the community groups, like Empower Texans and Stop Predatory Gambling who made this success possible. The Texas Humane Legislation Network, the ASPCA and the HSUS strongly urged their members to make calls and write letters, and some of their members also attended the Racing Commission hearings. Above all, we would like to thank each of you for responding to our alerts and raising your voices for the greyhounds whenever needed!

Please continue to support us as we fight for the closure of Gulf Greyhound Park and the adoption of all the dogs now confined there. Together we can do it!
