Is this racing or slots? Watch and decide

Dear Friends,

The good news is that there is only one operational dog track left in Texas! The bad news is that this last, losing business is now asking the Texas Racing Commission to be subsidized with slot machines. Watch our new video to learn more about this new scheme to prop up Gulf Greyhound Park with so-called "instant racing" machines.

instant racingIf this dangerous proposal passes, greyhounds will continue to suffer and die for years to come. But without expanded gambling, the facility may join the many other Texas dog tracks that have already closed. Read our report on dog racing in Texas here.

You can help close down this terrible track once and for all. Please sign our petition and make a call to Governor Rick Perry now. You may also call him directly at 512-463-2000 or send a message to him on line here.

Key Points:

  • Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane and should not be subsidized with slot machine profits.

  • Hundreds of greyhounds endure lives of confinement at Gulf Greyhound Park. They are kept in warehouse style kennels, in small cages that are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.

  • More than two thousand greyhound injuries have been reported at Gulf Greyhound Park since 2008, including eighty-six greyhounds that died or were euthanized.

  • Greyhound racing is dying in Texas. Between 2007 and 2012, gambling on live dog racing in the state declined by 61%.

  • Despite what racetrack owners claim, "instant racing" machines are not a new form of racing. They are slot machines that can only be approved via constitutional amendment.

  • This is an end-run around lawmakers and the governor himself, who have repeatedly refused to legalize slot machines in the state.

Finally, after you call and send your e-mail, please share this message with everyone you know who cares about dogs and who wants to see the laws of Texas enforced. Together, we can defeat this dangerous proposal and usher in an end to dog racing in the Lone Star State.
