Dear Friends,
At this very moment, our bill to prohibit dog racing is on Governor Hickenlooper's desk! If he signs this measure (or does not veto it) within the next ten days, Colorado will become the 39th state to prohibit dog racing.
Sponsored by Representative KC Becker and Senators Lois Tochtrop, Pat Steadman and Linda Newell, HB 1146 removes from statute the 1948 authorization for dog racing in the state. The legislation was drafted by GREY2K USA President and General Counsel Christine Dorchak and enthusiastically supported by the Colorado Voters for Animals, Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare, the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States.
Please contact the Governor now and ask him to sign HB-1146. You may also call him at (303) 866-2471 or fax (303) 866-2003. Give your name, address and phone number and let him know that dog racing is a losing business both for the state and for the greyhounds. Both arguments are important to make.
The facts speak for themselves:
-
Since the state's legalization of greyhound racing in 1948, five greyhound race tracks have opened and closed for business in Colorado. Interest in greyhound racing suffered such catastrophic declines that only one track survived by 2007. Mile High Greyhound Park in Commerce City reported a loss of $700,000 and ended live racing in 2008.
-
At commercial racetracks, greyhounds endure lives of terrible confinement and are kept in warehouse-style kennels, cages that are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.
-
Between 1993 and 2007, 2,636 greyhound injuries were reported at Colorado tracks. Injuries included broken legs and fractured spines.

Although the last Colorado greyhound track closed in 2008, new ones could open at any time unless we act now!
