Letters and E-mails Needed to Help Iowa Greyhounds!

Dear Friends:

Greyhounds in Iowa need your help!

A bill will soon be filed by State Representative Mary Mascher to end dog racing in Iowa. This humane measure, which is supported by racetrack owners, will also return tens of millions of dollars in much-needed revenue to the state.

Please help this important effort today by doing three things:

  1. Send a polite letter to your State Representative and State Senator, and ask them to support ending dog racing. Below, you will find talking points you can use to help write your letter. To find out who represents you, click here. If you receive a response from your State lawmakers, please forward it to us.

  2. Send a letter to the editor to your local newspaper, and ask your fellow citizens to also support ending dog racing. To find your local newspaper, click here.

  3. Send a short, polite e-mail to Representative Mascher and thank her for supporting the greyhounds. She can be reached at mary.mascher@legis.state.ia.us.

Then, forward this e-mail to everyone you know and ask them to help the greyhounds. Together, we can make a difference for the dogs!

Talking Points:

  • Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane, and should end. At Iowa dog tracks, thousands of dogs endure lives of confinement and many suffer serious injuries. In 2008, according to state records, more than one hundred dogs suffered injuries at Iowa racetracks, including dogs that suffered broken legs and other serious injuries.

  • Local racetracks are losing money on greyhound races, and want to end live dog racing.

  • Ending greyhound racing will provide the state with tens of millions in additional revenue, revenue that could be used to support community colleges, public education, roads, public safety and other important needs.

  • Right now, tens of millions of dollars in casino gambling profits are being used to subsidize a very small number of greyhound owners, many of whom live out-of-state.

For the greyhounds,
