Hooray! Dog racing is over in Alabama

There are no operational dog tracks in Alabama. Greyhound racing remains legal in the state, however, as a prohibition has not yet passed into law.1

There were once four tracks in Alabama, all regulated on the county level. Greenetrack ended live racing in 1996.2 VictoryLand ceased live racing on June 1, 2011.3 Citing declining demand, Mobile Greyhound Park discontinued live racing on August 19, 2017.4 And Birmingham Race Course held its last race on March 18, 2020, as owners determined business levels did not justify continuing to race.5 On August 20, 2022, it was announced that the abandoned VictoryLand dog track would become a rescue operation and shelter for 5,000 homeless dogs from around the country and around the world.6
