There are two operational dog tracks in Alabama, the Birmingham Race Course in Birmingham and Mobile Greyhound Park in Theodore. Both tracks conduct year-round live racing. As of January 9, 2014 there were 377 greyhounds designated as active racers at the Birmingham track.1 GREY2K USA is unable to determine the exact number of greyhounds racing at Mobile at this time, but there were six kennels listed on the racing program as of February 12, 2014.2
Instead of one state racing commission, each track is regulated by its own county commission. The Mobile County Racing Commission and the Birmingham Racing Commission have their own set of racing rules.
In 2012, a total of $17,741,756.20 was wagered on live greyhound races in the state.3 By 2013, the amount wagered on races at the Birmingham Race Course had declined by 19.85%, down to $7,795,631.4 Data from the Mobile track for 2013 is not yet available.
